The US Army’s “Sky Soldiers” of the 173rd Airborne Brigade have jumped into a training ground in Germany for exercise Saber Junction 2024.
Synopsis
US Army paratroopers from the Italy-based 173rd Airborne Brigade jumped into Hohenfels Training Area in Germany for the annual US-led exercise Saber Junction.
The exercise tests the 173rd’s ability to quickly carry out an airborne operation alongside 10 NATO Allies and partners – a task uniquely suited to the Europe-based paratrooper brigade, which serves as the US Army’s contingency response force in Europe. For this year’s iteration, US Air Force transport aircraft are performing take-offs and landings from the training area’s austere landing strip, recently reactivated to give pilots experience performing quick turn-around missions.
Participating countries include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Italy, Lithuania, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Saber Junction 2024 started on 4 September and continues until 19 September.
Footage includes shots of paratroopers landing in Hohenfels, shots of a US Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft landing inside the training area and an interview with US Army Brigadier General Steven Carpenter, Commander of the 7th Army Training Command.

You've got nations like Italy that's not only providing the division headquarters for this exercise, but also Italy is providing a task force underneath one of our storied brigades, 173rd Airborne Brigade. The British have brought an aviation task force of close to 500 soldiers with not only combat platforms but transportation platforms in this fight.” (02:15) SOUNDBITE (English) US Army Brigadier General Steven Carpenter, Commander, 7th Army Training Command “I think now more than ever, the NATO alliance realises that we can't do all of this on our own. All of us speak different languages. But at the end of the day, we've got to speak the same war-fighting language. And that language is NATO.”
