Six thousand personnel from 14 NATO Allies took part in Exercise Dynamic Mariner, off the coast of Italy – helping to train Italy for a very special role.

Synopsis

Naval forces from 14 Allied nations gathered in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Italy for exercise Dynamic Mariner 23. The exercise ran from 23 October to 6 November.
The exercise involved more than 6,000 personnel and featured a diverse range of naval and air assets - approximately 30 warships (including an Italian aircraft carrier), submarines and helicopters. Other aircraft included Harriers and F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters. Fourteen NATO Allies -- Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States -- participated with assets, personnel and observers.
Dynamic Mariner 23 was vital training for the Italian Navy, as it prepares to take over the NATO Response Force Maritime element (NRF/M) from Türkiye in 2024.
Footage includes shots of ships sailing at sea (including Italian Navy frigates Carabinieri and Carlo Bergamini) and soundbites from the Commander of Allied Maritime Command, Vice Admiral Mike Utley, CB, OBE.

(03:33) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) COMMANDER OF ALLIED MARITIME COMMAND (MARCOM), VICE ADMIRAL MIKE UTLEY, CB, OBE
“It’s a huge demonstration of ‘deter and assure’. This is both a national Italian exercise but also a NATO exercise, and it’s the first time MARCOM has worked directly with the Italian Navy to put an exercise together, and the joint staffs working together, with over 20 ships, more than 5,500 people, 20 aircraft, so a real win from that perspective. And of course having this level of capability at sea, at this time, has just got to be good news for the Alliance and reassuring for the population of NATO."

(04:14) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) COMMANDER OF ALLIED MARITIME COMMAND, VICE ADMIRAL MIKE UTLEY, CB, OBE
“So the NRF Maritime is part of the very high readiness force of NATO that is immediately ready to respond to changing circumstances, and that can be anything from humanitarian disaster relief, right up to crisis and warfighting, so they have to be ready for all circumstances.”
