The German Air Force has sent six Eurofighters to Iceland to demonstrate Germany’s ability to deploy air power to any location.

Synopsis

The German Air Force has sent fighter jets to Iceland to conduct training in the High North as part of Exercise Rapid Viking 2023. The exercise is intended to demonstrate Germany’s readiness and ability to swiftly deploy air power to any location. The six Eurofighters and two A400M transport planes are working with the Icelandic Coastguard and other regional Allies from 1-10 August. The Eurofighters are conducting up to eight training sorties each day.

This broll includes footage taken from a German Air Force A400M, showing German Eurofighter jets taking part in an air interception exercise and conducting air-to-air refueling while flying from Berlin to Keflavik. It also includes soundbites from Captain ‘Timone’ of the German Air Force.

(01:06) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – CAPTAIN ‘TIMONE’, GERMAN AIR FORCE
‘It's a blast, right? So the Eurofighter itself, it's carefree. So it's like, yeah, it has autopilot, all the fun stuff, but it's carefree. I can, I can move the jet wherever I want to in any given time, it will give back the feedback that this jet says with all the computers, you can get this right now from me back, and we'll do that without getting out of control or putting anything in a dangerous situation, which is nice. So there isn't really a worry about how to fly the jet, but how to deploy it is more the focus, I guess, flying the Eurofighter.’
(01:42) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – CAPTAIN ‘TIMONE’, GERMAN AIR FORCE
‘For, for us it was really about deploying in a very, very small like space, meaning not a lot of cargo, not a lot of maintenance parts, but with a maximum of jets that we can pretty much get over to Iceland. It's not a NATO like or QRA or like a quick reaction, quick reaction alert mission. It's more about for us the training and also primarily moving over to Iceland in a fairly quickly manner.’
