The French and Italian Air Forces are protecting the skies over Romania with fighter aircraft and air defence systems.

Synopsis

The Allied French and Italian Air Forces are protecting the skies over Romania with fighter aircraft and air defence systems.

In May this year, the French Air and Space Force deployed the SAMP/T Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system (nicknamed “MAMBA”). Its Aster 30 missile is capable of intercepting aircraft and missiles hundreds of kilometres away. In late November, aircraft from Spain, Türkiye and the United States tested the system with simulated attacks, and the MAMBA was successful in fending them off.

Meanwhile, a detachment of Eurofighter Typhoon fighters from the Italian Air Force is securing the skies alongside the Romanian Air Force. The Italian jets arrived at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in late November, taking over from the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Together, the French SAMs and the Italian fighters form an integral part of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System, which protects Allies from airborne threats 24/7, 365 days a year.

Footage includes shots of the MAMBA system and Eurofighter Typhoons on the tarmac.

(04:58) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) - Lieutenant Colonel Michele Morelli, Detachment Commander, Italian Air Force
“The Italian Air Force has deployed about two weeks ago to get ready to take the enhanced Air Policing activity, which basically consists of two aircraft sitting on alert. We call it QRA, Quick Reaction Alert. That means that once the siren goes off, the pilots will have 15 minutes to get airborne at the maximum time they have, and to get airborne and follow the orders from CAOC [Combined Air Operations Centre) Torrejón, which will tell them where to go and who to intercept. The mission is to provide any support in the air to anything that flies that has a problem, or, of course, to protect NATO boundaries and Romanian airspace.”
(06:42) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) - Lieutenant Colonel Michele Morelli, detachment commander, Italian Air Force
“The NATO calls it enhanced Air Policing because the Romanians are performing their own activity, QRA, but of course, as we do for many other countries around the NATO boundaries, other countries can provide that help, their assets, which is a fantastic opportunity for us to draw up, and to get to know each other. Whilst we are here, we are performing training missions with other countries, other pilots and other jets. We get to know each other better and we fly together, and that I believe creates the basic for a really strong coalition like NATO is.”
