From solar power to hybrid grids -- when soldiers in the field use smart energy it’s a win-win for NATO and for the environment.

Synopsis

NATO is testing new energy-saving technologies to make the military more efficient, save money and reduce reliance on fossil fuels when in the field.

At the Smart Energy Training and Assessment Camp (SETAC), soldiers and civilians from five NATO nations (Canada, France, Italy, Lithuania and the United States) are working together in the fields of solar, hybrid, LED lighting, energy metering, and water purification and portable solar arrays and battery systems.

The SETAC concept is deployed as part of the multinational Exercise Capable Logistician 2019, a regular exercise for NATO and partner nations to test interoperability and assess NATO standards.

Footage includes shots of different smart energy technologies and contributing nations plus interview with NATO Energy Security Officer.

“So NATO Smart Energy is all about the reduction of fossil fuel consumption for our armed forces. Working with more energy-efficient diesel generators, but also with more energy-efficient tents, for example, insulated tents with energy-efficient lights, for example LED lights, we reduce the diesel consumption. And by reducing the diesel consumption, we are reducing the environmental footprint and we are reducing the logistical footprint.”
“The innovative technologies which exist already in the civil world is very realistic for military use. It is already quite robust, it just has to be scaled down, become more mobile, flexible, modular, because we’re talking about NATO forces, multinational camps and then it has to be made soldier-proofed.”
“I hope they’re going to change the mindset in NATO The military should change and the politicians, diplomats, deciding what the military needs to do, really needs to do, needs to change and I hope that we’re going to have a breakthrough in smart energy within a year or two.”
