While many of us have been experiencing periods of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, a soldier from Porsanger Battalion in northern Norway tells us what life’s like for them.

They’re among NATO’s most isolated soldiers, Norway’s Porsanger Battalion based in Troms og Finnmark county in the northernmost part of the country. For three months out of the year, the population of Finnmark does not see daylight.
While many of us have been experiencing periods of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, a soldier from Porsanger Battalion tells us what life’s like for them.

“Hi, this is Private Warrington in NATO’s north-east flank in Finnmark, Norway.
It’s important for us to maintain a presence here up North. We have a responsibility despite COVID-19.
Considering our isolated circumstances, we’re probably better equipped than most to handle such a situation.
Though it can be challenging as approximately three months out of the year it’s dark season and the sun doesn’t come up. So, in this period it can be difficult to stay positive and keep morale high.
Our solution is to focus on the little things. We make a pact to go outside and do activities together, making it easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
