How do you get multiple military vehicles across a river without a bridge? You build a floating platform using amphibious rigs, as demonstrated during an exercise in Romania.

Synopsis

More than 8,000 soldiers from six NATO Allied and partner nations are taking part in an exercise that spans across Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. Saber Guardian 2019 is co-led by Romanian Land Forces and U.S. Army Europe. The exercise included a range of activities designed to improve the integration of multinational forces. Countries taking part include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, and the United States. Saber Guardian 2019 runs from 3 until 24 June.

This footage includes shots of amphibious rigs being used to make a floating bridge. Plus, video of various Romanian and US military vehicles making the crossing.

NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Bulgaria completed Exercise Platinum Lion 22, passing an important milestone as it moves towards achieving full operational capability. The battlegroup currently consists of the Bulgarian Army’s 42nd Mechanised Battalion and a mechanised infantry company from the US Army’s 3rd Armoured Brigade Combat Team. Soldiers from the British Army’s Royal Irish Regiment worked alongside the battlegroup for Platinum Lion 22, learning how to manoeuvre and communicate with their NATO Allies as they repelled a simulated attack. The battlegroup in Bulgaria was created following a decision by the North Atlantic Council to reinforce the eastern part of the Alliance, following Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. To help establish the battlegroup, the US Army’s 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade has spent time mentoring the 42nd Mechanised Battalion at Novo Selo, helping them learn how to operate in a multinational context. The Italian Army will assume leadership of the battlegroup this fall and lead the way for other nations to participate including Bulgaria and the United States. Footage includes shots of Bulgarian, UK and US troops during the exercise, as well as interviews with Bulgarian and US officers.

Multinational battlegroup in Bulgaria completes its biggest exercise yet
Allied rocket artillery systems practised synchronising their fires during Dynamic Front 2022, a US-hosted artillery live-fire exercise held in Germany. During the exercise, Multiple-Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) from Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States were used to perform fire missions under the command of a multinational higher headquarters, played this year by the UK-led Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). This is made possible by the Artillery Systems Cooperation Activities (ASCA), a software programme that links artillery batteries from different countries to a centralised, multinational command and control centre. Currently, nine NATO Allies participate in this programme, including Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States. During the exercise, the Slovak and US armies strengthened their cooperation by joining forces in the field: soldiers from the US Army’s 1-41 Field Artillery Battalion acted as a fire control centre for a battery from the Slovak 54th MLRS battalion, receiving and passing on fire missions. The US soldiers were part of the forces deployed to Europe in early 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Additionally, Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) from NATO invitee Finland worked alongside JTACS from the Czech Republic and Spain to direct the artillery fire while also calling in simulated air strikes from the US Air Force fighters. Dynamic Front 22 featured MLRS systems that several NATO Allies have donated to Ukraine, including the M270 and the RM-70. Footage includes shots of MLRS systems conducting a live-fire exercise; Czech and Finnish forward observers guiding Allied aircraft; US soldiers practising artillery procedures; and interviews with Slovak, UK, and US soldiers.
