Meet NATO’s quick reaction force, the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force.

Synopsis

In the event of a crisis, NATO turns to its Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), a rapidly deployable, multinational force capable of quickly bringing air, land, maritime and Special Operations forces to bear.
The VJTF will play a critical role in Trident Juncture 2018, a large NATO exercise involving some 40,000 troops from more than 30 nations.
This footage features the German Army’s 9th Armoured Brigade, which will lead the VJTF in 2019, and Norway’s Telemark Battalion, which will also participate in the VJTF starting next year. The United Kingdom currently leads the VJTF, which is staffed by Allies on a rotational basis.
Footage includes shots of German Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles and troops preparing to move out, boarding ferries, and crossing the Weser River. Footage also includes various drone shots of the river crossing. Footage of the Norwegian soldiers includes shots of troops training during an urban warfare exercise. Interviews: Brigadier General Ullrich Spannuth, commander of Panzerlehrbrigade 9; and 1st Lieutenant Helge Lammerschmidt, a combat engineer officer; and Norwegian Capt. Brage Reinaas.

“For us, a natural thing to support other allies when they ask for it, and the VJTF is a part of the collective defense of Europe, and that’s a part of NATO, so it’s our responsibility.”
(05:09) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – 1ST LIEUTENANT HELGE LAMMERSCHMIDT, GERMAN ARMY
“So right now, we are building a ferry boat made by M3 rigs, amphibious rigs, capable to carry armored vehicles. We will have two of them in a couple of minutes, and then we start river crossing here of the armored mechanized infantry battalion 92.
(05:29) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – 1ST LIEUTENANT HELGE LAMMERSCHMIDT, GERMAN ARMY
“Well actually, it’s a very effective and quick bridging equipment. It’s a unique, it’s a very unique capability in NATO, we do have them in Minden, and it’s cost us maybe 10 minutes to build up a ferry like this in the background.
(05:44) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) – 1ST LIEUTENANT HELGE LAMMERSCHMIDT, GERMAN ARMY
“So we need to have this capability to be able to operate in all terrain, so we are able with this equipment to cross rivers, as long as necessary, and we are even capable to cross rivers with a bridge up to 160 meters, with the equipment in the VJTF brigade.”
(06:03) SOUNDBITE – BRIGADIER GENERAL ULLRICH SPANNUTH, COMMANDER, PANZERLEHRBRIGADE 9
“So we are training for our task we have got as the VJTF Land Brigade 2019. So I’m Brigadier Ullrich Spannuth, I’m the commander of Panzerlehrbrigade 9 in Munster, and in this position I’m also the commander of NATO’s VJTF Land Brigade 2019. The VJTF Brigade 2019 is highly-capable, multinational, and robust fighting force, which is ready and which is prepared to react on behalf of NATO on any crisis, wherever it may occur. The VJTF Land ’19 consists of some 8,000 troops, and coming from 9 nations, so it’s a truly multinational endeavor, a truly multinational force.”
